My intention was to create the suggestion of a vital living past that was not accessible to the viewer.</p><p style="text-align: center;"> Last year I received the gift of a beautiful small print made by my friend Susan Goddard. What a fantastic print and depiction of light it is.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnZ9UvxWeZGABNLiKLypdyJPqfMsQSyCAlR0xw2SbE6XS7CK1KfSkqf1vHOuy1qFZajy5Fqi-hkFjUJIS5LDXW9IJU36u9OjMHjg6oiAfkiG-tXzb1FYoC071O88ZfbHm3cT-egkyFSNfkN8o60TeOipiZkcGquBjy58R47aT5fuN7vS8F5lrsd7CVxg/s2377/20220328_121610.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2377" data-original-width="1730" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnZ9UvxWeZGABNLiKLypdyJPqfMsQSyCAlR0xw2SbE6XS7CK1KfSkqf1vHOuy1qFZajy5Fqi-hkFjUJIS5LDXW9IJU36u9OjMHjg6oiAfkiG-tXzb1FYoC071O88ZfbHm3cT-egkyFSNfkN8o60TeOipiZkcGquBjy58R47aT5fuN7vS8F5lrsd7CVxg/s320/20220328_121610.jpg" width="233" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>The drive home...down the bush track, at night. </i>Susan Goddard <i> No 14/15</i></div><p style="text-align: center;">The viewer experiences the feeling of being in the car in the bush with the headlights piercing into the darkness and lighting up fragments of the close trees and surrounds whilst the background remains black and impenetrable.</p><p style="text-align: center;">I decided to hang these two prints together in my room and was immediately struck by the interesting way light has been utilised in these prints. In both the viewer is peering into the darkness. However the intention is quite opposite - in one the foreground is well lit and the background impenetrable and in the other the foreground is dark and closed off with the suggestion of unreachable life and light in the background. </p><p style="text-align: center;">I enjoy seeing them both hanging together and am constantly fascinated by these two images, their similarities and differences.</p>Helen Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15280405082160683429noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-483656250907080776.post-9908239465525438322021-12-10T11:45:00.001+10:002021-12-10T15:16:12.492+10:00Merry Christmas<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgfdkut_O8n1xrwrY4n0SFWGuu42mVPIKGfIt5TKzitTjGPNcw0pqn6mSe2Hsr0LYT7CJK9ZusjBp-ygctdaw9evUoJFNKAj1_4ADVBDZo4Hpbd_ujDKB0NndUmivvxyS4ZTyv430w-uGnGfTb5l69jalgf27FV5MDJ0mGRW1imxwpK2qRuu-bDlkbSng=s2048" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgfdkut_O8n1xrwrY4n0SFWGuu42mVPIKGfIt5TKzitTjGPNcw0pqn6mSe2Hsr0LYT7CJK9ZusjBp-ygctdaw9evUoJFNKAj1_4ADVBDZo4Hpbd_ujDKB0NndUmivvxyS4ZTyv430w-uGnGfTb5l69jalgf27FV5MDJ0mGRW1imxwpK2qRuu-bDlkbSng=s320" width="240" /></a></div><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Every Christmas for about thirty years I used to make handmade Christmas cards to exchange with many friends who also did the same thing. The term was introduced by semiotician Julia Kristeva in the late 1960's. It has much potential for use in artists books and I think it could and should be a method used by artist book makers more often.</p><p style="text-align: center;">I first used intertextuality as a means of creating meaning in an artwork I made in 1993.</p><p style="text-align: center;">The piece was a sculptural book made of calfskin vellum called <i>In the Beginning Far off in the Dreamtime. </i>The form of the book is an icosahedron - a crystal shape created in nature. This icosahedron carries excerpts from two different creation texts, <i>In the beginning </i>from Genesis in the bible and <i>Far off in the Dreamtime, </i>the story of the Rainbow Serpent. By juxtaposing the texts, meaning and issues not contained in the individual texts were created, relating to Australian/Aboriginal cultural issues, reconciliation and belief systems.</p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Px8TEPlWagQ/YRTKUr-WSoI/AAAAAAAADWQ/NUFUai8arcABqpSSns0CcMjsh6eX_njcACLcBGAsYHQ/s1028/Picture%2B252.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="1028" height="199" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Px8TEPlWagQ/YRTKUr-WSoI/AAAAAAAADWQ/NUFUai8arcABqpSSns0CcMjsh6eX_njcACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Picture%2B252.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This artwork was purchased by the State Library of Queensland in 1993 after being included in an exhibition at the State Library. After attaching these to the initial quarter circle book, I had created the structure of a semi circle book which also displays as a dome.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iQLTr_BHZvo/YDmj0ZVtzFI/AAAAAAAAC_w/LnLfvY7AnXE_HBMethOyc4DeaCdpr0zyACLcBGAsYHQ/s2236/Lost%2Bin%2BDead%2BEnd%2BStreets%2BCROP.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1020" data-original-width="2236" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iQLTr_BHZvo/YDmj0ZVtzFI/AAAAAAAAC_w/LnLfvY7AnXE_HBMethOyc4DeaCdpr0zyACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Lost%2Bin%2BDead%2BEnd%2BStreets%2BCROP.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wDbFyr4Zbm4/YDmkAEE0d2I/AAAAAAAAC_4/4SrmdFbO2ioTUDLO4iLimJg2QGcmwrX8ACLcBGAsYHQ/s2288/Lost%2Bin%2Ba%2BMillion%2BDead%2BEnd%2BStreets%2Bopening%2Bby%2BHelen%2BMalone.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1712" data-original-width="2288" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wDbFyr4Zbm4/YDmkAEE0d2I/AAAAAAAAC_4/4SrmdFbO2ioTUDLO4iLimJg2QGcmwrX8ACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Lost%2Bin%2Ba%2BMillion%2BDead%2BEnd%2BStreets%2Bopening%2Bby%2BHelen%2BMalone.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--l2ILiPiLuc/YDmkDrwJBTI/AAAAAAAAC_8/lt452fCZmbIwOiItv-HKSiv90jIkkA1ewCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/Lost%2Bin%2Ba%2BMillion%2BDead%2BEnd%2BStreets400x299%2Bpix.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="299" data-original-width="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--l2ILiPiLuc/YDmkDrwJBTI/AAAAAAAAC_8/lt452fCZmbIwOiItv-HKSiv90jIkkA1ewCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Lost%2Bin%2Ba%2BMillion%2BDead%2BEnd%2BStreets400x299%2Bpix.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3HaNesV_IoE/YDmkJ0xIyZI/AAAAAAAADAA/yOQIBnhKc6UvgUuk2FOg7EgtxQfL6ykyQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2288/Lost%2Bin%2Ba%2BMillion%2BDead%2BEnd%2BStreets%2Bdetail%2Bby%2BHelen%2BMalone.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1712" data-original-width="2288" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3HaNesV_IoE/YDmkJ0xIyZI/AAAAAAAADAA/yOQIBnhKc6UvgUuk2FOg7EgtxQfL6ykyQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Lost%2Bin%2Ba%2BMillion%2BDead%2BEnd%2BStreets%2Bdetail%2Bby%2BHelen%2BMalone.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">My artist's statement for this book was </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">'The structure and format reflect being 'lost' and going round in circles, never reaching the end destination. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It has been very quiet here for a number of months but there have been a lot of things going on the in the background including working on a large commission, visitors from France and a son's wedding.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A very insightful appraisal of the collaborative book <i>The Future of an Illusion </i>by Jack Oudyn and myself has been published on <i>Books on Books, Curated by Robert Bolick</i><b>. </b>I am really pleased with this appraisal as it shows the writer really understood our intentions with this piece. <b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Please take a look - you can find it <a href="https://books-on-books.com/2017/12/05/bookmarking-book-art-helen-malone-and-jack-oudyn/">here</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Other good news is that a copy of this book is now in the collection of the State Library of Queensland.</div>

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hBqMNjmJMaY/WXRHzmXOKAI/AAAAAAAACwk/Nzge1yeMdzI9B2cHFnrtO4XKXANyU9gRACLcBGAs/s1600/Book%2Bby%2BJasper%2BJohns%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hBqMNjmJMaY/WXRHzmXOKAI/AAAAAAAACwk/Nzge1yeMdzI9B2cHFnrtO4XKXANyU9gRACLcBGAs/s400/Book%2Bby%2BJasper%2BJohns%2B2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Foirades/Fizzles, </i>Jasper Johns 1976</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
While I was in London in June I kept a look out for any artists books or related material.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of the most enjoyable days was spent at the British Museum exhibition <i>The American Dream pop to present </i>which covered the unprecedented scale, ambition and experimentation with printmaking in America during the period from the early sixties onwards<br />
and included artists like Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Jim Dine and many others.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've long been a fan of Jasper Johns' work and it was great to see his<br />
screenprinted <i>Flags </i>on display in this exhibition<i>.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was particularly thrilled to see an artists book by Johns from 1976 called <i>Foirades/Fizzles. </i> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Johns used five texts by Samuel Beckett in the book which also contained thirty three Intaglio prints.<i> </i>The book is about translation between French and English, words and images, colour and shades of grey. There are stencilled words moving forwards and backwards across the page which are impossible to read but create a beautiful surface.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Unfortunately it was a traditional book format displayed in a glass case </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
so I could only see a one page spread.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gCXe_nXjobU/WXRTjDRW9UI/AAAAAAAACxA/IJahyGOUo2UwcYn7hy1af7tkefSDc0rgACLcBGAs/s1600/Jim%2BDine%2Bcrop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1035" data-original-width="1600" height="257" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gCXe_nXjobU/WXRTjDRW9UI/AAAAAAAACxA/IJahyGOUo2UwcYn7hy1af7tkefSDc0rgACLcBGAs/s400/Jim%2BDine%2Bcrop.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>The Picture of Dorian Gray </i>Jim Dine</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There was an illustrated book by Jim Dine from 1968 which was a script adaptation of Oscar Wilde's</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>The Picture of Dorian Gray </i>and contained twelve lithographs and four loose etchings.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yGdpg5oWsg8/WXRTgG3-bYI/AAAAAAAACw8/LkbcVDZzHX4CkhiiOZfM7VChuuSN7Ax2wCEwYBhgL/s1600/Jim%2BDine%2B2%2Bcrop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="874" data-original-width="1600" height="217" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yGdpg5oWsg8/WXRTgG3-bYI/AAAAAAAACw8/LkbcVDZzHX4CkhiiOZfM7VChuuSN7Ax2wCEwYBhgL/s400/Jim%2BDine%2B2%2Bcrop.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Two loose etchings by Jim Dine from the book</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also came across a small artist-run book art bookshop in Pitfield Street, London which sells</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
artists books and small press publications.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-umZSrzYJP4w/WXRWZpgj6zI/AAAAAAAACxQ/sOrEF9JnagI-6_ZucpBgic-RSXhHryEqgCLcBGAs/s1600/bookartbookshop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="848" data-original-width="1600" height="211" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-umZSrzYJP4w/WXRWZpgj6zI/AAAAAAAACxQ/sOrEF9JnagI-6_ZucpBgic-RSXhHryEqgCLcBGAs/s400/bookartbookshop.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It looked really interesting with lots of Artists Books displayed in the window (behind wire security).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I saw some books there by Helen Douglas who had recently visited the State Library here in Brisbane for a lecture and workshop. I have to say that most of the books I could see on display </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
were flat rather than sculptural books.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hy_iniFlHng/WXRYz6z_18I/AAAAAAAACxc/Piy03TAE5YAzOA06XqijyngyQfs-UppSQCLcBGAs/s1600/WP_20170530_09_39_52_Pro.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hy_iniFlHng/WXRYz6z_18I/AAAAAAAACxc/Piy03TAE5YAzOA06XqijyngyQfs-UppSQCLcBGAs/s400/WP_20170530_09_39_52_Pro.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The unfortunate thing was that I discovered this shop on a Sunday when I only had a few days</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
left in London, and the bookshop is only open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday each week. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I didn't get to look inside and actually handle the books which was a shame</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
for me and for them because I am sure I would have purchased some of them.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
However they do have a website with more details <a href="http://www.bookartbookshop.com/">here</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Visiting the <i style="font-weight: bold;">bookartbookshop </i>on one of the days they are open will be on my to-do list</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
next time I am in London.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kXtZayZa1us/WXRsLX7OEdI/AAAAAAAACxw/d4cSaWHD8fIKHW-M76vo4x_9_ZNkk7RowCLcBGAs/s1600/Perspex%2Bartists%2Bbook%2Bin%2BCamarthen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1543" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kXtZayZa1us/WXRsLX7OEdI/AAAAAAAACxw/d4cSaWHD8fIKHW-M76vo4x_9_ZNkk7RowCLcBGAs/s400/Perspex%2Bartists%2Bbook%2Bin%2BCamarthen.jpg" width="385" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Elizabeth Brickell</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And an unexpected surprise to see this perspex artists book by Elizabeth Brickell<br />
displayed in a gallery in the small town of Camarthen in Wales.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
While I was in London I went to meet an English friend who was staying<br />
at her son's house in Walthamstow. She suggested that the one thing I might be<br />
interested in seeing in Walthamstow was William Morris's House and Gallery.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Although I know William Morris of Arts and Crafts fame really well, I had no idea the Gallery<br />
was there or that it even existed and it turned out to be a lovely surprise<br />
and a most enjoyable and informative morning. <br />
<br />
William Morris was born in 1834 and lived in the house with his family from 1848 to 1856.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
There were a number of interactive displays, films, audio and activities to<br />
participate in along the way. I couldn't resist making a little brass rubbing of a medieval knight<br />
and was very tempted to make a block print or some stained glass in the workshop gallery.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
Morris rejected industrial manufacturing methods and this gallery explained how his fabrics, wallpapers, carpets, tapestries<br />
and stained glass were produced by craftsmen using traditional methods. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There was a gallery of particular interest on the first floor devoted to "The Ideal Book" .</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Late in his life Morris set up a private press and became a book designer.<br />
Many beautiful original books from the Kelmscott Press were on display,<br />
including a copy of the Kelmscott <i>Chaucer.</i></div>

The Galleries covered all aspects of his life and besides being an active radical socialist fighting for equality, he fought for the preservation of heritage and the environment.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After sitting in the sun having coffee in the lovely conservatory style cafe at the back of the house there was still the garden to explore which was pretty, if a bit overgrown, and included a lovely moat and garden bridge.</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pvXD6-H3tow/WWHFR8A3JKI/AAAAAAAACvI/y02mZavCJxY55mNECUfOCdhb6SqeLjDTgCLcBGAs/s1600/Ed%2BRushca%2BEvery%2BBuilding%2Bon%2BSunset%2BStrip.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pvXD6-H3tow/WWHFR8A3JKI/AAAAAAAACvI/y02mZavCJxY55mNECUfOCdhb6SqeLjDTgCLcBGAs/s320/Ed%2BRushca%2BEvery%2BBuilding%2Bon%2BSunset%2BStrip.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ed Ruscha, <i>Every Building on the Sunset Strip, </i>displayed</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have always placed importance on the presentation and display of my Artists Books</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and I think a focus on their visual aspect creates a much more rewarding experience<br />
for the viewer and is an important part of the genre.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was recently in London and I saw some copies of Ed Ruscha's books displayed<br />
for sale in two different locations.<br />
<br />
In one <i>Twentysix Gasoline stations</i> was displayed closed in a glass cabinet and<br />
in the other it was also in a glass cabinet and opened at a one page spread. <br />
I have seen Ruscha's books before always displayed like this or<br />
showing little more than a couple of pages.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="An image of Twentysix gasoline stations by Edward Ruscha" src="https://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/media/thumbnails/collection_images/4/427.2008.a-vv%23a%23S.jpg.161x210_q85.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Ed Ruscha, Book cover<br />
<br />
I attended <i>The American Dream </i><i>Pop to Present </i>at the British Museum</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(more on that in another post) and I was delighted to find<br />
Ed Ruscha's <i>Every Building on the Sunset Strip </i>from 1966</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
unfolded to its full length of 7.6 metres and displayed along one long wall.<br />
<br />
I had never seen any of his books displayed like this and it made such a difference<br />
to get the sense of the buildings opposite each other stretched out along the strip<br />
and walk the length along it viewing it. <br />
Overall it looks also very much like car tracks along the paper.<br />
It brought the book to life and made viewing it a fantastic experience. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was great to see such a perceptive display from the Curators at the British Museum. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Apart from this blog, I have had a website which contains a portfolio of much of my work over the past twenty six years.<br />
It includes examples of some of my early books, like <i>The Roman Alphabet, 1993 </i>pictured above.<br />
This website will be discontinued on 3rd June 2017.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have a new website <i>Helen Malone Visual Artist </i>which contains the same content but has a new look. You will find it <a href="http://helenmalonevisualartist.blogspot.com.au/">here</a>. </div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aKu8kp-z4ig/WNjBgFyvfoI/AAAAAAAACGE/uavUjFVY4n4ABkhO9Jb7yOz79QD2fzk0gCLcB/s1600/Cover%2Bof%2BSonia%2BDelaunay%2527s%2Bbook.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aKu8kp-z4ig/WNjBgFyvfoI/AAAAAAAACGE/uavUjFVY4n4ABkhO9Jb7yOz79QD2fzk0gCLcB/s400/Cover%2Bof%2BSonia%2BDelaunay%2527s%2Bbook.jpg" width="187" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The First Artists Book that took my breath away was <i>La Prose du Trans-Siberien et de la Petite Jehanne de France </i>by the poet Blaise Cendrars and the artist Sonia Delaunay, dating from 1913. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was studying Art History at the University of Qld in the 80's and I was writing an essay about the work of Sonia Delaunay. I was amazed and overwhelmed when I saw this book (or I should say I saw this book reproduced in books). I have never been fortunate enough to view one of the original copies.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The book is a 2 metre long concertina book intended to be hung vertically. It is made using letterpress and 'Pochoir', a type of stencil technique that was used in illustration at the time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-duP46Fk0htM/WNjESPBHOVI/AAAAAAAACGU/XUkW8CRgdVs0gjOF9yPOgtgZhNihLFILQCLcB/s1600/Sonia%2BDelaunay%2BProse%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-duP46Fk0htM/WNjESPBHOVI/AAAAAAAACGU/XUkW8CRgdVs0gjOF9yPOgtgZhNihLFILQCLcB/s400/Sonia%2BDelaunay%2BProse%2B2.jpg" width="90" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This book made such an impression on me that ever since I started making books in the late 1980's, the concertina and variations on it have been the most common structures I have used in my own books. The introduction to the 'galleries' section on my<a href="http://www.visualartist.info/helenmalone"> website</a> mentions the influence of this book. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2G3Tpygvh70/WNjBofRHNSI/AAAAAAAACGM/IbHidX7qA8oF3YVA7ZlOx20LF__UApgNwCEw/s1600/Detail%2Bof%2BLa%2BProse%2Bby%2BSonia%2BDelaunay.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2G3Tpygvh70/WNjBofRHNSI/AAAAAAAACGM/IbHidX7qA8oF3YVA7ZlOx20LF__UApgNwCEw/s400/Detail%2Bof%2BLa%2BProse%2Bby%2BSonia%2BDelaunay.jpg" width="236" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Detail of Sonia Delaunay's artwork in <i>La Prose</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A copy of the book was exhibited at MOMA in New York in 2013 and there is an blog post <a href="https://www.mhpbooks.com/the-first-simultaneous-book-on-display-at-moma/">here</a> about it written at the time of the exhibition.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The latest news I've just discovered is that <a href="http://laprosepochoir.blogspot.com.au/p/about-kitty-maryatt.html">Kitty Maryatt</a> of Scripps College in Claremont, California is going to recreate the book as closely as possible to the original. She is writing a blog about the project <a href="http://laprosepochoir.blogspot.com.au/p/about-this-project.html">here</a> which also outlines her research to date. The book will be produced by letterpress in Paris, and Kitty will work on the pochoir with the Atelier Coloris in Ploubazlanec in France. She will then do the making of vellum covers and the binding back in California. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sounds like a dream job!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'll certainly be following the blog and her progress. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This piece is a reworking of a book sculpture called <i>Rimbaud's Drunken Boat </i>which had been on exhibition in France and was suitable for that exhibition with it's French themed poetry connection.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For this exhibition I reworked the etching on the perspex pages (moving currents, waves, water, seaweed, fish, debris) making it more dense and filled the gaps on each page with crosses referencing lives lost at sea - a reflection on refugees who have lost their lives in Australian waters.<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 14pt;"> </span></div>
