News from SLQ

I was contacted recently by the Communications Officer at SLQ to let me know
that my book The River City (which had been on display in the ALA Showcase
from 24 February to 27 August) has been included in their publication Highlights 2023.
The image appears across the lower part of the open spread pages 32-33.

I'm also very pleased to learn that my Ten Books on Architecture will be coming out of storage
for a White Gloves Event on the 1st February, held in conjunction with SLQ's new exhibition
on architecture called Purpose Built - an exhibition I will be very interested in seeing.

The artists books available on the White Gloves day will also include a copy of Ed Ruscha's well known artists book,  Every Building on the Sunset Strip.   I was fortunate to see the best display I've ever seen of this book at the British Museum when I was in London in 2017.  I was so impressed I wrote a blog post about it which you can find here.

Thank you, SLQ.  It's great to see the books in your large collection come out to be enjoyed.

500 Handmade Books

My copy of Lark Books 500 Handmade Books Volume 2 arrived on my doorstep this morning, and it seems to have taken a while to get here as others have posted about it weeks ago.  I've enjoyed a long browsing session and was thrilled to see the work of a number of other Australian artists I know included.  The book is well produced and enjoyable to read with all the information about the work listed under the images.

My piece Ten Books on Architecture is included in the book and I was pleased to find out that Lark had used my image as one of five used on their blog here to promote the book.

I made the third and final version of the "Ten Books" in July/August for the State Library of Queensland and this piece is now in their collection.

Keith Smith and Scott McCarney

These two sample books were made at a two day workshop with Keith and Scott in Brisbane in 2000.  Keith taught the hard cover paper and leather book and Scott the concertina spine book with soft cover.  I'm unable to attend their five day workshop in the SLQ this year, but I'm looking forward to attending their lecture at the SLQ on Sunday 27th May.

There is information about their workshops on the new SLQ Australian Library of Art blog here - a great way to keep up with what's going on at the ALA.  You'll also find a post about the opening of the Life's Journey exhibition at Redland Gallery.
